Abstract. This article examines the challenges of designing and constructing highways in cryolithozone regions using the second design principle, which limits ground settlement to permissible thresholds for specific pavement types. The study analyzes methods for stabilizing the subgrade soils of highway roadbeds. It reviews regulatory frameworks regulating road construction in permafrost regions and identifies the most critical factor influencing thermal regime changes and subgrade soil stability.
To modify the thermal regime and enhance stability, a constructional-technological measure involving the formation of a water reservoir along the embankment slopes of the highway roadbed has been developed. A general scheme and description of the constructional-technological process for implementing this measure are presented. The most significant geometric parameters of the proposed solution are identified. Predictions of thermal regime changes in permafrost subgrade soils are made both without and with the proposed measure. The effectiveness of the proposed solution is confirmed by numerical modeling using the QFrost software package. Results of numerical modeling of the highway roadbed in permafrost conditions are presented. Principal conclusions from the research and tasks for further study are formulated.
