Abstract. Currently, numerical modeling using the finite element method is an integral part of the design of structures in difficult engineering and geological conditions. When numerically modeling the stress-strain state of a soil mass based on degraded permafrost soils, it is necessary to take into account the characteristics of both thawed and frozen soils.

The correctness of using various software depends not only on the reliability and number of soil characteristics used in the calculation models, but also on the adequacy of the model itself, which must take into account the unique characteristics of soils. The soils that need special attention include degradable permafrost soils, since their characteristics change not only when exposed to loads, but also when they are thawed.

This article considers the determination of the physico-mechanical characteristics of a sample of thawed and frozen soil on shear and compression devices in order to subsequently create a numerical model to account for the degradation processes of the permafrost thawing base of railway embankments.

The use of the elastoplastic calculation model is due to the most reliable description of the processes occurring in the construction of the railway roadbed and its degrading permafrost base. For the subsequent development of a model of the stress-strain state of the soil mass, it is necessary to identify the initial parameters of soils in the thawed and frozen state.
