Abstract. This article presents an overview of the foreign experience in the physical simulation of operation of the bridge structure expansion joints and the examples of specific models of testing rigs for the various systems.

It is shown that there are currently quite many systems of expansion joints in the bridge erection industry, and each one of them has its own design features and operational conditions. Therefore, the problem of the premature failure of expansion joints is a major one. A number of foreign scientists together with the manufacturers are already trying to find a solution of this problem. Based on the results of their tests, many experts agree on the need to develop a common method for determining quality characteristics of specific types of joints and their estimated service life.

It is noted that bench tests allow to conduct a whole series of studies in order to accelerate the potential evaluation of the operational characteristics of expansion joints which herein after enables to improve the design of expansion joints and the heat-affected surface zones, increase their durability and help engineers to choose the most rational system of expansion joints for bridge structures at the design stage.

A conclusion is made with respect to the analysis of the foreign methods of expansion joint bench tests resulting in the development of a bench test rig at the MADI (Moscow Institute of Road Traffic) polygon composed of the “Carousel” KUIDM 2 (Universal Road Machinery Test System) in order to determine the endurance of metallic support structures of the Russian and foreign modular expansion joints and material wear resistance of the heat-affected surface zones.
