Abstract. This research paper is devoted to the topic of gabion structures in the road construction. Nowadays, gabion structures are one of the key tools to protect beach line, caving, strengthening slopes of embankments and depressions, slopes, ravines and other road and bridge structures. The world experience shows that gabion structures are one of the most universal, effective and perspective structures used in construction of road and bridges. In this article gabions are considered as strengthening of culvert heads. In the work are presented the theoretical aspects of these constructions and analysis of gabions and traditional structures in order to estimate the effectiveness of these constructions in strengthening of culvert heads. For each type of construction has been formed cost account thanks to in research was analyzed economical aspects. In addition, based on the received data in this article presents an empirical analysis of the relevance of considered hypotheses. Thus, based on an estimation of structures in the research was revealed that the most effective for strengthening the heads of culverts is a structure in combination with gabions and riprap. The conducted research and experience of road and bridge construction of many countries, including the domestic experience of recent years, demonstrated that gabion constructions have very wide capabilities and properties, such as economy, strength and durability, which are importance key for the road construction.
