Abstract. The presented article is devoted to the study of effect of the pavement state of the roads with improved road surface on the safety of automobile traffic. Actuality of the issue under study is confirmed both by the statistical data of the State Road Traffic Safety Inspectorate and by a significant list of scientific works dealing with issues of the water and heat balance of the soil mass. Within a framework of the article the author considers both the roads located within the city and suburban road sections.
The work shows the influence of temperature and humidity on the process of straight-freezing and directly on the integrity of the road surface. The mathematical models reflecting the temperature distribution processes and filtration movement of fluid in the soil.

The author also suggests two options for improving technical and service performance of roads, which in turn will have a positive impact on the safety and smoothness of traffic.

Keywords: road-traffic safety; water and thermal regime; frost boil; base of the auto-road; intra-subsurface heat sources; engineering construction; collector
