Abstract. This study investigates the use of the best integral approximation method for approximating various experimental data obtained for certain structural and construction materials using different theoretical dependencies. For example, the approximation of viscous properties of the Geomat S 60 geogrid material used in reinforcing structural layers of road pavements during the construction of new roads and the reconstruction of existing ones, as well as in strengthening railway embankment slopes is considered. Additionally, the approximation of the dependence of creep strain rate on tensile stress, obtained for steel 304SS at a temperature of T = 593°C, using power-law functions is examined. Furthermore, examples related to the identification of empirical functions for the depth of pipeline corrosion wear and empirical dependencies of the penetration depth of an aggressive medium into heavy concrete over time are analyzed using different theoretical models (specifically, exponential and power-law models). It is shown that using the best integral approximation method for the aforementioned approximations and identifications provides better or approximately the same agreement between theoretical and empirical dependencies obtained for various materials based on diverse experimental data-compared to the least squares method.

Thus, it can be argued that the use of the best integral approximation method for approximating or identifying experimental data of various natures serves as an alternative to the least squares method for the same purposes.

Keywords: creep; empirical creep curve; theoretical creep curve; depth of pipeline corrosion wear; depth of aggressive medium penetration into heavy concrete; least squares method; best integral approximation method
