Technical and economic advantages of submerged floating tunnels

Abstract. The article examines the justification of the technical and economic advantages of a submerged floating tunnel, which is a complex task due to the current lack of construction experience for such structures. In such cases, simplified cost estimation methodologies are typically employed, which involve a number of assumptions. The article presents a technical and economic comparison of a submerged floating tunnel with cable-stayed and suspension bridges, as well as an underground tunnel constructed using a combination of mining and shield tunneling methods, based on one such methodology. In the first stage, the cost of bridge alternatives was calculated using a simplified method; then, using the same method, the cost of the submerged floating tunnel was estimated under similar conditions with different cross-sectional configurations of the submerged floating tunnel’s stiffening girder. By analyzing the cost calculation results, the economic advantages of the submerged floating tunnel over suspension and cable-stayed bridges were demonstrated, and the relationship between construction cost and crossing length for different alternatives was determined. A technical and economic comparison was also made with the existing Seikan Tunnel to evaluate a submerged floating tunnel constructed under similar conditions. Based on the results obtained, the article concludes that the submerged floating tunnel is economically efficient compared to the other considered structures.
