Abstract. Despite the widespread use of overpasses in the construction of railways in the world, in Russia these structures are used mainly in the automotive industry. Simplicity of design and the absence of the need for expensive ventilation and drainage systems, in comparison with tunnel construction, makes it possible to solve the problem of straightening the track profile in conditions where it is impossible to use standard embankments and recesses associated with expensive excavation work (in areas where the profile is complicated by prolonged ascents and descents, accompanied by a sharp drop in height and in places of permafrost). Sections with a mountain-pass profile have long-term speed limits, and also require the use of a pushing locomotive at the rear of the train to allow higher-mass trains to pass.
An analytical calculation of the throughput showed that reducing the shoulder of trains with a pushing locomotive has a lesser effect on the throughput of sections. An increase in throughput is possible only if the boost section is completely eliminated by straightening the path profile.
For implementation, it is proposed to rely on the experience of foreign countries, namely China, where currently 85 % of railways are laid on viaducts. These technologies will make it possible to straighten the track profile, which will lead to a reduction in technological overload of the railway line, eliminating the use of regulatory measures at technical stations. The positive effect will be to reduce the shortage of throughput and increase the reliability of cargo delivery.
