Abstract. Provision of the necessary illumination level of the roadway is a condition of all participants safety of transport traffic. The problematics is especially urgent, as with the development of technologies road lighting is undergoing a revolution, mainly due to the introduction of LED lighting fixtures. The paper discusses the influence of various factors on the motorways and highways illumination. These include the lighting fixtures elevation and the spacing between poles. The benefits of using different types of lighting fixtures are discussed. It is found that replacing mercury arc lamps with LED lamps will reduce the cost of road lighting due to the possibility of their higher positioning on poles, increased spacing between poles, and increased illuminance. The text also pays considerable attention to the poles selection and the use of modelling software to optimise road and highway lighting. This paper investigates the impact of modern technologies, such as LED lighting fixtures, on the efficiency and energy efficiency of motorway lighting, as well as a comparison with traditional types of lighting fixtures. Given the importance of lighting for road safety, continued research in this area is necessary to optimise the use of modern technology and ensure future road safety.
