The paper systematizes the key risks: the initiating events (external influences and internal factors) are classified, the mechanisms of destruction propagation are studied in detail depending on the type of critical element (shrouds, pylons, supports). The research methodology includes a comparative analysis of historical disasters, a review of modern modeling methods (nonlinear dynamic FEM analysis, probabilistic estimates) and experimental approaches.

The central place in the research is occupied by the analysis of principles and practical solutions for countering progressive destruction. The philosophy of protective design is considered, based on the creation of alternative load paths, increasing the local stability of elements and ensuring plasticity. A review of patent solutions aimed at improving the survivability of bridges, such as improved expansion joints, monitoring systems and reconstruction methods, has been conducted.

As a result of the research, it is proved that the most effective strategy is an integrated approach combining redundancy of the design scheme, timely monitoring of the technical condition and the use of innovative materials. The compromise nature of the choice between split and non-split systems in terms of damage localization and the risk of cascade collapse is revealed. The practical significance of the work lies in providing systematized data and recommendations that can be used to design new and assess the stability of existing bridge structures, as well as to improve the regulatory framework in the field of transport infrastructure safety.

Keywords: progressive destruction; bridge structures; risk analysis; stability of structures; patent solutions; monitoring systems; survivability of structures

Strelnikov Daniil Sergeevich Industrial University of Tyumen, Tyumen, Russia E-mail: 20010507@inbox.ru ORCID: https://orcid.org/0009-0000-8257-6721 Ovchinnikov Ilya Igorevich Industrial University of Tyumen, Tyumen, Russia Ufa State Petroleum Technological University, Ufa, Russia E-mail: bridgeart@mail.ru ORCID: https://orcid.org/0000-0001-8370-297X RSCI: https://elibrary.ru/author_profile.asp?id=177132 SCOPUS: https://www.scopus.com/authid/detail.url?authorId=57191523104 Abstract.
