By creating durable, waterproof layers at the level of the structural layer and the surface of stone material grains, reducing the number of unclosed pores, and minimizing microcracks on the surface of crushed stone grains, it is possible to extend the service life of asphalt concrete pavement. The article demonstrates that improving the efficiency of using stone materials in asphalt concrete can be achieved through targeted modification of their surface properties. One method of such modification is the surface treatment of stone materials with an aqueous solution of lignosulfonates.

After treating the crushed stone surface with a lignosulfonate solution and subsequent thermal drying, a layer forms that fills the micropores in the surface structure of limestone crushed stone. It has been established that the efficiency of the lignosulfonate solution is influenced by the duration and temperature of exposure. Evaluation of crushed stone performance indicators at different temperatures and exposure times showed a possible reduction in abrasion loss by 27,5 % and a 50 % decrease in water absorption.

The study demonstrates that using crushed stone treated with lignosulfonates leads to improved performance in hot dense asphalt concrete mixtures. Indicators of water resistance and long-term water saturation resistance increased. The achieved results can be attributed to the reduced porosity of the crushed stone grain surface structure due to the sealing of pores and microcracks.

Keywords: asphalt concrete; crushed stone; stone materials; lignosulfonate; surface treatment; asphalt concrete pavement; strengthening; wear resistance

1, 2Konstantin G.
