Glotov, e-mail: dima-glotov@mail.ru<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Abstract.<\/strong> Expansion joints are a significant structural element of highway bridge crossings. They are located at the junction between the superstructure and the abutment wall or between the ends of the main girders. The durability of the artificial structure as a whole depends on proper calculation and adherence to installation technology, as these joints compensate for thermal climatic movements of the superstructure ends, as well as dynamic loads exerted on the bridge structure by vehicular traffic. Currently, the service life of expansion joints is significantly lower than the lifespan declared by manufacturers. Existing designs are annually modernized, and new constructions are developed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This article outlines the requirements for expansion joints in bridge structures, reviews existing types of designs according to regulatory documentation, and evaluates their advantages and disadvantages based on operational experience in artificial structures. It highlights the most popular and advanced manufacturers of expansion joints used in modern design in the Russian Federation and identifies promising types of joints. A calculation of normative thermal climatic impact is performed based on initial data according to regulatory documentation SP 35.13330.2011.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The author examines the causes of defects in the interface zone between road surfacing and expansion joint structures, which include dynamic loads, environmental impacts, low quality of materials used, and violations of installation and operational requirements.
