The aseismic design issues and transport structures construction are discussed against the background of recent catastrophic events, emphasising the need to improve the regulatory framework and adaptation to real seismic conditions. Based on a literature sources study and data analysis on past seismic disasters, the paper focuses on the need for an integrated approach to ensuring the transport structures safety. A critical review of Russian and foreign scientific literature is given, and the experience of some countries containing seismically active zones in the struggle for the safety of transport infrastructure is noted. Special attention is given to the bridge’s damage analysis after earthquakes and the proposed methods for assessing geodynamic safety. In general, attention is drawn to the relevance and importance of research in the field of earthquake-resistant bridge design and its relevance to the transport infrastructure safety under seismic activity. One of the challenges facing regulatory developers is the limited descriptive and design basis for new seismic protection systems, and the need to fund research in this area is also emphasised. Finally, it is pointed out that damage and failure of bridge structures is the result of the interaction of several factors, including unpredictability of seismic events, imperfect design and construction processes, staffing shortages, and improper operation. It is noted that the information analysis and systematisation on bridge structures damage caused by seismic activity play a key role in the development of methods to prevent them and reduce the consequences of accidents. The development question of seismic-resistant bridge construction in Russia is raised.

Keywords: bridges; transport structures; seismic protection; damage; earthquakes; bridge accidents; seismic protection standards; example of bridge collapse

1Alina R.
