Abstract. Various studies have proven the effectiveness of using carbide sludge to strengthen the soils of highways. The greatest effect is achieved when strengthening clay soils. There are practically no studies on the use of carbide sludge to strengthen ash and slag mixtures from coal combustion. Ash and slag mixtures from coal combustion contain aluminum and silicon oxides, which can react with calcium hydroxide and form new compounds that increase the strength characteristics of reinforced soil. The article presents the results of a study of the properties of carbide sludge, as well as the results of the development of the composition of reinforced soil based on the use of ash and slag mixture, carbide sludge and Portland cement. Reinforcement of the ash and slag mixture with carbide sludge does not allow to obtain high strength characteristics. When Portland cement is added to the compositions in an amount of 3 % by weight of dry soil, the compressive strength in the water-saturated state increases to 1,5 MPa, and the compressive strength after 25 cycles of freezing and thawing is 1,2 MPa. The compositions can be used to build an additional layer of pavement and roadbed layers of low technical categories. The use of the developed composition of the ash and slag mixture reinforced with Portland cement and carbide sludge in the construction of the pavement leads to an increase in the total thickness of the pavement structure by 10 % in comparison with the structures of the pavement using traditional materials. The reduction in the cost of building a road surface structure using the developed compounds in comparison with the construction of a road surface using traditional materials amounted to 3–5 % (9400–18 215 thousand rubles).
