Abstract. In this article on the basis of analysis the following considerations are formulated:

  • failures and collapses of transport constructions occurred in the past, occur in present time and probably will occur in the future;
  • failures and collapses of transport constructions happen in all corners of the world, in all countries, regardless of their economic health; presence of a greater number of transport constructions may cause greater number of failures and collapses;
  • economic downturn, crises usually lead to an increase in the number of failures and collapses of transport constructions;
  • real reasons for the reduction in the number of failures and collapses of transport constructions in the near future are not expected, and mostly transport constructions with long time of maintenance will be destructed;
  • systematization of information about failures and collapses of transport constructions, study of the reasons why they occur, transfer of this information to professionals which are involved in the design, construction and maintenance of transport constructions, will decrease number of accidents and reduce the severity of consequences;
  • research of causes of the failures and collapses of transport constructions and methods of their prevention during the training of engineering and scientific staff for the transport construction industry will also reduce the intensity of the such events occurrence.

For more safety of transport constructions it is necessary to consider that:

  • transport constructions safety is very important element of the country’s national security, in line with energy, industrial, etc.;
  • questions of transport constructions safety shouldn’t be a place for competition, but the basis for team-work of different level specialists (engineers, scientists, managers, investors, customers, contractors);
  • it is necessary to begin without further delay the systematization of efforts for comprehensive safety ensure of transport constructions, and to start the creation of scientific schools and groups for transport constructions safety and prevention the accidents occurrence on them.

Then there is a brief overview of Russian and foreign publications about bridge construction failures and examples of bridges failures. The main causes of failures were: underestimation of wind load and aerodynamic instability; stability loss of elements; faults in the technology of construction and repair works. This list with examples of bridge failures and collapses will be continued in the next part of this article.

Keywords: bridge; transport constructions; failure; bridge collapse; bridge structures collapse; maintenance safety; examples of bridges failures; progressive bridges collapse
