Abstract. This article examines the application of gray relational analysis to selecting a method for stabilizing deep (up to 37 meters) soil excavations during the construction of the Kerch — Feodosia — Belogorsk — Simferopol — Bakhchisaray — Sevastopol («Tavrida») highway in challenging terrain. The author studied the soil conditions and the distribution of aquifers along the most challenging sections of the route. The study area was identified as being susceptible to the following potential adverse exogenous processes: development of landslide foci during slope undercutting; creep development; erosion; waterlogging and soil weathering. This necessitated a detailed, alternative design of landslide prevention measures. The author considered various options for engineering protection of the highway: slope alignment to the required slopes; construction of massive concrete retaining walls; construction of gabion structures; reinforcement with pile anti-landslide structures; Strengthening with pile-anchor structures; strengthening with slab-anchor structures; use of combined (pile-anchor and slab-anchor) structures. The main criteria in the evaluation using gray relational analysis were: economic efficiency; load-bearing capacity; durability; technological complexity; resistance to seismic loads. Relational coefficients were calculated and integral indicators were determined for all measures. Based on the final ranking of slope strengthening options, the feasibility of using combined (pile-anchor and slab-anchor) structures was determined. A technical and economic comparison of the considered options based on gray relational analysis made it possible to design the most reliable structures, which have been built and are currently successfully operated.
