Abstract. The article presents data on construction and technical condition of the exploited concrete piers of railway bridges. The most widespread defects, damages and other factors that reduce the loading capacity of piers have been exposed. The traditional methods of increasing the carrying capacity of the centrally and eccentrically compressed reinforced-concrete elements of piers and an innovative method with using polymer composite materials are considered. The description of status of the polymer composite material industry in the Russian Federation is given.
Information on research in the field of concrete distortion in a triaxial stress state and the basic empirical dependences used to determine the strength of concrete reinforced with a shell made of polymer composite materials are cited. In addition, information on the characteristics of work for shell made of composite materials as distinct from work of reinforcement made of concrete and metal structures is provided. The article considers the main foreign and domestic normative documents regulatory the use of composite materials for reinforcing concrete structures. In conclusion, the authors of article formulate a goal of research and tasks that should be carried out to achieve this goal.
